Ceramics: A Fragile History.

Whether it's for celebrating birth, marriage and death (our own or royal), eating and drinking or showing the world our social status, ceramics contain more than just our tea or coffee - they contain something of our lives, our social DNA, and reveal a lot about our taste and habits as a nation.

Episode 1 - The Story Of Clay.
Ceramics are where art meets function; one of our oldest and most fundamental art forms, that sits at the centre of our homes. The first film in this three-part series looks at a history of domestic pottery in Britain from Tudor times onwards, tracing the evolution of its different techniques and styles, and examining what our pots can tell us in intimate detail how preceeding generations lived and saw themselves.

Britain’s Biggest Heists S01.

This fascinating crime series takes a step by step journey through six of Britain?s most infamous robberies. Can bank robbers and diamond busters get away with the prefect crime?

Ep1 : Brinks Mat.
In 1983 a gang of armed robbers hijacked a security depot near Heathrow Airport and held the guards to ransom, expecting to steal cash in the region of £3 million pounds. Their operation didn?t exactly go according to plan. Security guard Robin Risely couldn?t remember his part of the codes to the safes and remarkably the gang stumbled on a much bigger prize ? £26 million of gold bullion.

Ep2 : Security Express.
A gang of armed robbers prayed on the Security Express Cash Depot on Curtain Road, London to successfully execute Britain?s most lucrative cash robbery of the time. This case is told by Freddie Foreman, an ex-armed robber and a long-time associate of the Krays, his story explains the complexity of the crime and how he was extradited from Spain and charged with handling stolen money from the robbery.

Ep3 : Millennium Dome Diamonds.
The Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London, became the scene of Britain?s biggest attempted heist. The Millennium Star, a one off diamond and a set of rare blue gems on show at the attraction, became the target of a highly dangerous gang of thieves. In the most audacious attack seen on British shores, the thugs drove a digger into the Dome and tried to steal the diamonds worth £300 million.

Ep4 : Knightsbridge Safety Deposit Box Raid.
Italy?s most wanted criminal, Valerio Viccei, arrives on UK shores after being hunted for over 50 separate armed robberies in his native country. Viccei, with his Italian charm and expensive taste in cars, wastes no time robbing the very best of British banks to feed his illegitimate lifestyle and hunger for danger.

Ep5 : The Securitas Robbery.
In 2006 Tonbridge, Kent, became the scene of the largest ever cash heist in the world. A well organized and heavily armed gang forced their way into a security cash depot at night with the manager, Colin Dixon. He had been kidnapped by the robbers along with his family and held at gun point. The money stolen was a colossal £53 million, the biggest amount of cash ever stolen in a robbery.

Ep6 : The Great Train Robbery.
In 1963 a gang of robbers hijacked a post office train traveling from Glasgow to London Euston and stole more than £2 million. Hailed as the most audacious crime in British history, the heist was a success due to its meticulous planning. Now, 45 years on, we get an insight into the mastermind behind it all, Bruce Reynolds. We hear first hand how it all came together and what really happened on that fateful night from the man who started it all off.

How It Works: Metal, Plastics and Ceramics

Scientist Mark Miodownik hosts a three part series telling the story of how mankind?s knowledge of materials and their properties aided the development of civilisation.

1/3 : Metal.
Mark travels to Israel to trace the history of our love affair with gleaming, lustrous metal. He learns how we first extracted glinting copper from dull rock and used it to shape our world and reveals how our eternal quest for lighter, stronger metals led us to forge hard, sharp steel from malleable iron and to create complex alloys in order to conquer the skies. He investigates metals at the atomic level to reveal mysterious properties such as why they get stronger when they are hit, and he discovers how metal crystals can be grown to survive inside one of our most extreme environments ? the jet engine.

2/3 : Plastics.
The story of plastics ? created in the lab, they have brought luxury to the masses and shaped the modern age. He recounts tales of the mavericks responsible for some of plastic?s most outrageous failures and heady successes, from the explosive attempts to make a replacement for ivory billiard balls to the ultimately ubiquitous Bakelite. Investigating at atomic level, Mark discovers the extraordinary properties that have allowed plastics to dominate our world and reveals how the next generation of plastics will take its inspiration from nature, creating man-made materials which behave as though they are alive and which could help rebuild the human body.

3/3 : Ceramics.
Professor Mark Miodownik traces the story of ceramics. He looks at how we started with simple clay, sand and rock and changed them into pottery, glass and concrete ? materials that would allow us to build cities, transform the way we view our world and communicate at the speed of light. Deep within their inner structure Mark discovers some of ceramics? most intriguing secrets. He reveals why glass can be utterly transparent, why concrete continues to harden for hundreds of years and how cooling ceramics could transform the way we power cities of the future.

She Wolves -– England’s Early Queens

In the medieval and Tudor world there was no question in people?s minds about the order of God?s creation ? men ruled and women didn?t. A king was a warrior who literally fought to win power then battled to keep it. Yet despite everything that stood in their way, a handful of extraordinary women did attempt to rule medieval and Tudor England.

Ep1 : Matilda and Eleanor.
800 years ago, Matilda came within a hair?s breadth of being the first woman to be crowned queen of England in her own right. Castor explores how Matilda reached this point and why her bid for the throne ultimately failed. Her daughter-in-law Eleanor of Aquitaine was an equally formidable woman. Despite being remembered as the queen of courtly love, in reality during her long life she divorced one king and married another, only to lead a rebellion against him. She only finally achieved the power she craved in her seventies.

Ep2 : Isabella and Margaret.
In 1308 a 12-year-old girl, Isabella of France, became queen of England when she married the English king. A century later another young French girl, Margaret of Anjou, followed in her footsteps. Both these women were thrust into a violent and dysfunctional England and both felt driven to take control of the kingdom themselves. Isabella would be accused of murder and Margaret of destructive ambition ? it was Margaret who Shakespeare named the She Wolf. But as historian Helen Castor reveals, their self-assertion that would have seemed natural in a man was deemed unnatural, even monstrous in a woman.

Ep3 : Jane, Mary and Elizabeth.
Helen Castor looks at what happened when England was faced not just with inadequate kings, but no kings at all. In 1553, for the first time in English history all the contenders for the crown were female. In the lives of these three Tudor queens ? Jane, Mary and Elizabeth ? she explores how each woman struggled in turn with wearing a crown that was made for a male head. Elizabeth I seemed to show that not only could a woman rule, but could do so gloriously. But at what cost?

The Beauty Of Diagrams

Series in which mathematician Marcus du Sautoy explores the stories behind some of the most familiar scientific diagrams.

Episode 1: Vitruvian Man
Marcus du Sautoy looks at Leonardo da Vinci?s world-famous diagram of the perfect human body, which has many layers from anatomy to architecture, and defines our species like no other drawing before or since. The Vitruvian Man, drawn in the 1480s when he was living and working in Milan, has become one of the most famous images in the world. Leonardo?s drawings form a vast body of work, covering every imaginable subject in spectacular detail: from feet, skulls and hands to muscles and sinews; from hearts and lungs to buildings, bridges and flying machines. Vitruvian Man perfectly synthesises Leonardo?s passions for anatomy, for the mechanics of the human body and for geometry. It is also full of surprises, illustrating an ancient architectural riddle set out 1,500 years earlier by the classical writer Vitruvius about the relative proportions of buildings and men; a riddle that, even today, still fascinates and beguiles experts and viewers alike.

Episode 2: Copernicus
When Polish priest and astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus developed his extraordinary theory of a sun-centered universe 500 years ago, he was flying in the face of both science and religion. Mankind had believed for thousands of years that the earth was at the centre of the cosmos, and to disagree was to risk derision and accusations of heresy. For decades he was too afraid to publish, but the arrival of a young German scientist gave Copernicus courage, and his book and its extraordinary diagram were published in 1543, when he was on his deathbed. His image of the heliocentric universe changed forever our understanding of the cosmos, and of our place in it.

Episode 3: Newton?s Prism
In the mid-1660s, Isaac Newton bought a pair of prisms at a fair near Cambridge, which were to be the basis of a series of experiments that would unlock a secret that had occupied scientists for centuries ? the nature of light itself. To explain what he had done, Newton created a diagram. It is called The Crucial Experiment and is a pivotal image in scientific history, a graphic moment when the ancient world was overturned by modern science. Newton demonstrated that white light is not pure, but made up of a number of different colours, the colours of the rainbow. Newton?s ideas transformed our knowledge of what we see and how we see, and the prism and its refracted colours became a captivating image. From fibre-optics to the cover of Pink Floyd?s Dark Side of the Moon album, Newton?s work went on to influence centuries of science and art.

Episode 4: Florence Nightingale
Can a diagram save lives? Florence Nightingale is best known as the Lady of the Lamp, who cared for thousands of soldiers in appalling conditions during the Crimean War of 1854-6. What is less well-known is that she was a superb statistician, and the first to use a statistical graphic as a call to action. After the war, Nightingale wrote a passionate report on why the soldiers had died in such large numbers and it revealed the astonishing fact that out of 18,000 deaths, 16,000 had been due to infectious diseases in hospital rather than battle wounds. The report included her revolutionary and controversial ?Rose Diagram?, whose message was potent and direct ? hospitals can kill. The diagram was designed to persuade the British government that, if sanitation in hospitals was improved, many deaths could be avoided. Nightingale?s pioneering diagram was a catalyst in the creation of better and cleaner hospitals that would go on to save thousands of lives.

Episode 5: DNA
In the last hundred years, one diagrammatic image stands above all others. It represents a scientific breakthrough that has been voted the most significant in the 20th century, more important than penicillin or the first working computer. The double helix shows us what the structure of our DNA looks like. Francis Crick and James Watson announced their discovery in Nature magazine in April 1953, and their article included a diagram of the structure by Odile Crick. The image she drew has become so well known and loved that we now find it in a whole range of consumer products ? there are double helix ties, dog chews and even a perfume. So has the image of the double helix become so divorced from its original scientific setting that no one knows what it really is or what it stands for?

Episode 6: Pioneer Plaque
When the unmanned space probe Pioneer 10 took off from Cape Canaveral in March 1972, it had on board a remarkable diagram. The Pioneer Plaque was designed to communicate fundamental facts about Earth and its inhabitants to life on other planets. In carefully engraved graphic images and mathematical symbols, the plaque would reveal the Earth?s location in the solar system and show extra-terrestrial intelligent life what human beings looked like ? but how could one single diagram do all that ? what do you put in and what do you leave out? With its naked human figures, the plaque sparked arguments amongst feminists and conservatives. So was it, in the end, a great intellectual game or was it the most enterprising, artistic and scientific diagram of all time, perhaps even the ultimate diagram?

The Future Is Wild s03 -– 200 Million Years

Final of the three series of documentaries showing possible future worlds and animals.

The world is recovering from a mass extinction caused by a flood basalt eruption, much larger than the one that created the Siberian Traps. Fish have taken to the skies, squid to the forests and the world?s largest ever desert is filled with strange worms and insects. All the continents have collided into one another and fused into a single supercontinent, a second Pangaea. Unlike the cephalopods of 100 million years ago, such as the Swampus, which were amphibious, the cephalopods this day, such as the megasquid, no longer have to return to the water to live.

Episode 1
The Endless Desert is set in the central desert of the new Pangea. At this point in the future, there are no mammals, birds, reptiles or amphibians. With no rainfall reaching the middle of the single continent, the whole place has dried up. Patches of water are rare and in demand. Many of the animals here live in underground lakes and caves to get away from the heat of the desert.

Episode 2
The Global Ocean is set in the only ocean in the world. Since all the land is joined together, there is only one ocean now as well. Some views from space show the Earth as just a blue circle. This episode shows how weird things have got and, no matter what happens, life will continue to thrive in the oceans.

Episode 3
Graveyard Desert is set in a rainshadow desert on the eastern side of Earth?s only continent. The desert has little food so the animals here must make use of what they can. During violent ocean storms, some ocean flish are thrown over the mountains and land in the desert where they die. Bumblebeetles spend their entire lives searching for these dead ocean flish so they can lay their young in them.

Episode 4
The Tentacled Forest is set in the northern jungle. This forest is about the only place left on Earth where there is consistent rain and trees can grow. The trees here are lichen trees, descended from simple lichens. The forest is populated with a whole manner of creatures that would look out of place in our time. The episode shows how animals that were once aquatic have evolved to conquer the forests.

The Future Is Wild s02 –- 100 Million Years

Second of three series of documentaries showing what the future could hold.

The world is very hot and much of the land has became flooded by shallow seas. The surrounding land is brackish swamp. Antarctica has moved towards the tropics, and once again it became covered with trees as it had 300 million years before. Australia collided with North America and Asia, forcing up a monstrous mountain plateau higher than the modern Himalayas. What else will evolution come up with?

Episode 1
Waterland is set in the Bay of Bengal, 100,000,000 years into the future and shows that at this point of the future, volcanoes are belching out copious amounts of greenhouse gases causing the planet to overheat.

Episode 2
Flooded World is set in the shallow seas of the future. This episode focusses on the extinction of the coral reefs and their replacement with red algae reefs. It shows how this food chain works and how the animals have evolved together.

Episode 3
At this point in the future, Antarctica has moved so far north it is now on the equator and has grown a jungle. It shows how seabirds have evolved to deal with the new dangers of the jungle. Oxygen levels have also allowed insects to grow big again.

Episode 4
The Great Plateau is set in a lofty plateau created by the collision of Australia (who moved northward) against Japan and Kamchatka (the Asian tectonic plate). At the end of the episode, we see the beginning of a mass extinction, which almost wipes the slate clean and allows evolution to start.

The Future Is Wild s01 -– 5 Million Years

First of three series of documentaries that show possible future worlds and future animals that could evolve once humans have vanished and evolution has had time to take hold.

Episode 1
Welcome to the Future shows what is to be featured in the coming episodes. It opens by discussing which animals could easily disappear in a few thousand years and explains that evolution will continue. It features many clips from later episodes and gives a good overview of the coming episodes.

Episode 2
Return of the Ice is set in Europe and follows the story of a female Snowstalker teaching her cubs to hunt, the Gannetwhale?s breeding season and the mass migration to the south of the Shagrats.

Episode 3
The Vanished Sea is set in what was the Mediterranean sea. The tip of Africa has collided with the southern tip of Spain, thus enclosing the Mediterranean and turning it into a lake. It has since dried up to become an enormous salt desert with a few lakes of ultra-saline water, as it was during the Messinian salinity crisis. The holiday islands that used to be in the sea are now mountains scattered throughout the desert.

Episode 4
Prairies of Amazonia is set in South America where the Amazon used to stand. Due to the cooling of the planet, the Amazon rainforest has vanished and has been replaced by grassland. Most primates have died out but the Babookari has evolved to live on the plains. They have also become much cleverer and can now make nets out of twigs to catch fish. There is also the Rattleback, a heavily defended rodent which is somewhat fireproof and birdproof and lives on a diet of Carakiller eggs.

Episode 5
Cold Kansas Desert is set in North America, examining the onset of the ice age which caused the agricultural belt of the USA to turn into a desert where temperatures at night regularly reach freezing. The episode shows how the animals have evolved to cope with the harsh features of this forbidding landscape.

The Nazi Titanic

The bizarre story of a forgotten propaganda film made by the Nazis about the sinking of the Titanic.

Made at the height of World War II, this film was conceived as the ultimate propaganda movie with the famous disaster recast as a story of Allied weakness and German courage. At the time it was one of the most expensive and ambitious movies ever filmed. The story of its creation rivals a Hollywood movie script with tales of betrayal, murder and massacre. It featured military personnel moved from the front to act as extras, the director was arrested and possibly executed on the orders of Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels and, in the last days of the war, the ship used for the filming was sank, as the Nazis tried to cover up the horrors of the Holocaust.

For 60 years, the film was shrouded in secrecy. Now, using Goebbels?s private diaries, unseen home-movies shot behind-the-scenes during the production and the original production design book, we reveal for the first time the extraordinary story of the Nazi Titanic.

War Horse - The Real Story

The extraordinary and deeply moving story of the million British horses that served in World War I ? a true story that is even more epic than any Hollywood feature film.

Told using rarely seen archive footage and testimony from First World War veterans who worked with horses, experts such as former RSPCA Chief Vet Mark Evans, historian Richard van Emden and British Army expert Dr David Kenyon and combined with the latest historical research. The story begins with the mass call-up of horses from every farm and country estate in the land. Racing commentator Brough Scott tells the tale of his aristocratic grandfather General Jack Seely and his beloved horse Warrior, who would become the most famous horse of the war, renowned for his amazing courage, and becoming a mascot to the troops.

The Mud Men S01, Johnny Vaughan and Steve Brooker

The Mud Men, Johnny Vaughan and Steve Brooker, are digging, delving, and unearthing along the banks of the River Thames and beyond. Follow them as they have a muddy good time in their hunt for buried treasure and hidden history.

The Thames has been the lifeblood of London for thousands of years; as a major site for trade, crime, industry and war. For food, drink, death and debauchery, and even as the capital-s giant rubbish bin. Britain-s most iconic river is one of the world-s richest archaeological sites, and the Society of Thames Mudlarks has been finding the treasure there since 1976.

Ep1 - Guns.
Johnny Vaughan and Steve Brooker hit gold on day one, as they mudlark on the holy grail of Thames foreshores at the Tower of London. While Steve investigates the military origins of a mysterious golden trumpet, Johnny re-unites a 250 year old musket ball with the Brown Bess gun that fired it. Together the boys go ballistic as they head to the firing range and try out the guns that have shaped 200 years of British Military history.

Ep2 - Tough Trades.
Our Mud Men, Johnny Vaughan and Steve Brooker, take a journey into London-s historical trades via the Thames at Wapping. Steve-s on a quest to find out about London-s historic alternative coinage and return an ancient trading token to its original home while Johnny gets to grips with the murky world of tobacco. Together they try out some very smelly 17th century trades and get a bit more than they bargained for with a gutsy sheep as they learn how to make condoms, 17th century style.

Ep3 - Tudor Beer & Witchcraft.
Digging on the foreshore at Greenwich leads Mud Men Johnny Vaughan and Steve Brooker back to the time of Henry VIII. Johnny gets his hands on some massive jugs and finds out about how the Tudors used beer bottles to ward off evil witches and Steve discovers the secret of how the Tudors drank beer morning noon and night yet somehow stayed sober. Together they embark on an investigation into the witch hunts that led thousands to their death and Steve gets a dunking as the finger of suspicion falls on the Mud God.

Ep4 - Georgian Gentlemen.
The Thames foreshore at Limehouse reveals a rich collection of Georgian finds and leads Mud Men, Johnny Vaughan and Steve Brooker, on a dandy adventure. Steve goes tops of the fops with a gorgeous Georgian makeover and Johnny uncovers the seedy world of 18th century London prostitutes. But things get personal as the finds lead the boys to investigate the 18th century gentleman-s obsession with dueling.

Ep5 - Prisons.
Today-s penal finds on the Millbank foreshore, site of London-s largest Victorian prison, result in Mud Men Johnny Vaughan and Steve Brooker looking at life inside. Johnny gets banged up in the secret remains of London-s oldest surviving prison while Steve experiences solitary confinement as he explores the Victorian idea of rehabilitation. And it-s a painful experience for Steve at the hands of enthusiastic rooky interrogator, Johnny, as they get to grips with rough justice in the form of torture.

Ep6 - WWII
The foreshore at Silvertown is the location for the Mud Men-s dig today. Infamous as the site of the largest explosion on mainland Britain in 1917 when the munitions factory blew up, the remnants of two world wars litter the banks of the river. Johnny Vaughan liberates an anti aircraft shell case from the mud which leads our intrepid Mud Men on a journey back in time to World War Two. Johnny discovers what it was like on the front line of London-s top secret defences, whilst Steve Brooker experiences the Blitz through the eyes of a survivor, and the Mud Men join the crew of HMS St Albans on an intensive experience of life as a raw recruit in the Royal Navy.
