Zero attention was paid to recent news which, in many a country, would justifiably have been cause for panic. But in Memogate obsessed Pakistan no military or civilian ruler — or any normally loquacious TV anchor — has yet commented upon the Annual Status of Education Report(ASER).Released one week ago, this damning indictment of Pakistan’s schools shows how badly the country is failing to teach children even the most elementary of skills. For a country with a huge youth bulge and a population growing out of control, the consequences are fearsome. Painstakingly prepared by a professional team — and helped by 5,000 local volunteers — the ASER report covered 2,599 villages/blocks, 49,793 households, and 146,874 children. It confirms that...
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) has rejected the Intra Court Appeal (ICA) filed by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani against the verdict of a smaller bench for framing charges of contempt of court against him.”The appeal is dismissed,” Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikhar Chaudhry said in court, reading the decision of the eight-member bench. PM Gilani will now have to appear before the SC on February 13 (Monday) for contempt proceedings. The CJ on Friday again said he wanted a clear answer on whether the prime minister would write the letter, telling his lawyer: “We are ready to give you 10 minutes to talk to the prime minister on the phone and let us know.” “I have no mandate to do that,” replied Gilani’s lawyer, Aitzaz Ahsan. Speaking to...
Defeats bring in internal controversies especially when they come in a row. The winning streak may produce the same effect if the case is Pakistani cricket team. Should we ditch Dav Whatmore, or tame the exhilarated Khan, or fifty-fifty? While the debate about the hot seat has been getting more intense with every passing triumph some owls are pondering what to do with the ‘ultimate block’ for the rest of the tour. The all patient Azhar Ali did not only create problems for the English bowling attack with his astute woodwork but also left the cricket pundits in a fix who did not think of him even as a contender for the short versions of the game before the legend killer series. It would be pertinent to mention here that the youngster who...
The calendar reads Friday the 10th, but in essence today is more like the feared Jason’s Friday the 13th. Surely, there won’t be any instant casualties but the day’s events are likely to kickstart a process that may ultimately claim the scalp of Prime Minister Gilani. With the PM’s legal counsel Aitzaz Ahsan scheduled to wrap up his arguments in the prime minister’s intra-court appeal against impending contempt charges by a smaller supreme court bench, the eight-member larger bench is expected to hand down a short order that will surely cast a long political shadow. And judging from the quality of Aitzaz’s arguments and the observations of the judges, the judgment may not exactly be to the prime minister’s liking. Yesterday was clearly...
ISLAMABAD: Parliamentary Secretary for Information Technology, Nawab Liaqat Ali Khan informed the National Assembly on Thursday that the government had blocked 13,000 obscene websiteson the internet. Recently, the judiciary and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) took action against **** websites by blocking or banning access to them in the country, following multiple petitions filed by the citizenry. “It is a serious issue and we are trying to address it,” said the IT parliamentary secretary, while replying to a Calling Attention Notice, adding that the government was mindful of the situation. Hence when asked about what steps were being taken to block such websites, Khan said that these websites were operating from outside and...
