Twelve Important Tips for a Happy Marriage Life: 1) Enter the Marriage with the Right Intention and Renew this Often Both spouses should enter the marriage with the pure intention of pleasing Allah, (سبحانه وتعالى), in order to receive His grace and blessings. The marriage itself, then, becomes an act of worship, and one for which both spouses will be rewarded. Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) will be pleased with them, and this will be the most critical element in ensuring peace, stability and happiness throughout the marital life. Realize that when an act of worship is continued over a long period of time, it becomes necessary to renew one’s intention often to remain on the correct path and to obtain the most benefit. 2) Remember...

2011 was a bleak year for Pakistan — even by its own harrowing standards. My father, Governor Salmaan Taseer, was assassinated by his own security guard in January for his stand on Pakistan’s cruel blasphemy laws, and minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti, the only Christian in the federal cabinet, was gunned down in March allegedly by the Punjabi Taliban for holding a similar view. In April, five of the six men accused of gang raping village woman Mukhtar Mai on the orders of a village council of elders were set free by the Supreme Court. Since the sexual assault on her in 2001, Mai has braved death threats to have her victimisers punished. She has appealed the verdict, but the court, it is widely believed, is unlikely to reverse the...
KARACHI: Millions of Pakistanis remained glued to their TV sets in late afternoon to watch live an explosive diatribe by Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza that harbours serious political consequences for his ruling party and even the overall political dispensation. Mirza accused MQM Quaid Altaf Hussain of treason, interior minister Rehman Malik of murder and protecting killers and of being a shameless liar. Mirza said he was in possession of letter, which purportedly Altaf Hussain had written to the then British Premier Tony Blair in 2001, offering to bring out hundreds of thousands of people in Karachi in support of any initiative or need of Tony Blair. At the end of his letter, Altaf Hussain urged Tony Blair to get the ISI disbanded before “it...
SLAMABAD: For some, Fiza Batool Gilani is a living example of the nepotism which has plagued Pakistan since its inception. She talks about empowerment, equality anddemocracy – yet people only listen because she speaks from her unearned position as the prime minister’s daughter. For others, Fiza is a thoughtful, determined young woman who did not choose to be Yousaf Raza Gilani’s daughter, but has chosen to make the most of her opportunities and cares deeply about making Pakistan a better place, especially for women. It’s a duality that continuously presents itself as Fiza tells The Express Tribune, from the cozy surroundings of Prime Minister House on a hill overlooking Islamabad, about the plight of the wretched of the earth. The...
