Mashal is an indirect Quranic name for boys and girls that means “light”, “lantern”, “torch”, anything that gives off light. It is derived from the Sh-Ain-L root which is used in Surat Maryam (Chapter 19 of the Quran):
He said, “My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has flared up with white (hairs), and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy.” (Quran 19:4)
