Mawlid (Arabic: مَولِد) is the observance of the birthday of the Islamic prophet Muhammad which is commemorated primarily on 12th of Rabi al-Awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar. It is observed by the majority of Muslims throughout the world.
Various forms of devotion pertaining to the birth of Muhammad can be found during the life of Muhammad himself, under the Caliphate of Umar, and under various early Muslim dynasties such as the Abbasids, Zengids and Fatimids, however, these were not a formal annual public holiday. The first to make the celebration of the birth of Muhammad into an official annual public holiday was the Ayyubid general Gökböri in 1207. In 1588, Mawlid was declared as an official holiday by the Ottoman Empire and became one of the Kandil. Most denominations of Islam approve of the commemoration of Muhammad's birthday; however, with the emergence of Wahhabism-Salafism, Deobandism and Ahl-i Hadith, many of the followers of these movements began to disapprove its commemoration, considering it an illicit religious innovation (bid'ah or bidat). Mawlid is recognized as a national holiday in most of the Muslim-majority countries of the world with the exception of Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Some non-Muslim majority countries with large Muslim populations such as India also recognise it as a public holiday.
