Iqbal Day, observed each year on November 9 to pay respect to poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, used to be a public holiday until 2015, when the then interior ministry abolished the public holiday.

Iqbal, popularly termed the “Poet of the East”, was born on November 9, 1877, in Sialkot. This birth anniversary is celebrated each year on the national level.
Last year, the interior ministry said it was the prerogative of the provincial governments to announce a public holiday in commemoration of the national poet. After that, the Sindh government declared that all the public and private schools across the province will remain closed on account of Iqbal Day. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government followed suit.
On Tuesday, a petitioner approached the Lahore High Court to re-declare Iqbal Day as a public holiday. It further said that a similar petition filed earlier is also still pending before the court. The application sought early hearing of the matter so that this year a public holiday is declared on November 9. The application filed in the LHC has nominated the federal and provincial governments as respondents on the matter of declaring Iqbal Day a public holiday.
Confusion persists on whether Iqbal Day will be a public holiday this year or not.
