Bhimber District:

Bhimber is the southernmost of the eight districts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir it borders Indian-administered Kashmir to the east. The district is located between Latitude: 32-48 to 33-34 and Longitude: 73.55 to 74-45, and has an area of 1516 km². The chief town is Bhimber.

History:

The area is very rich in archaeological remains due to its strategic location. It lies on the route that was followed by the Mughal Emperors for their frequent visits to the Kashmir Valley.Due to such important location it was called Gateway to Kashmir(Bab-e-Kashmir).

Until 1995 Bhimber was a sub-division (tehsil) of Mirpur District. In 1996 the Tehsil of Bhimber was removed from Mirpur and made into a separate district.

Location:

The district is bounded by Mirpur district to the northwest (and is 50 km from Mirpur city), and Punjab province in the west and south. It also shares borders with Indian administered Kashmir to the east.

The total area of the district is 1516 square kilometres and is divided into three Tehsils.

Demography:
According to the 1998 census, the total population of the district stands at 297,000, while its population according to 1999 projections is approximately 303,000. Latest figures show the population as 350,000, with an annual growth rate of 2.6% and household size of 6.7. In Tehsil Bhimber, there is village named "Gurah Lillian" which has many bricks making plants and plays a crucial role in the development of the whole district. In District Bhimber, there is a tribe system. Mostly people believe in caste system, and marry within their castes. Rare chances are present to marry with other castes. The main tribes are gujjars and jatts and then to a lesser extents there are Rajputs and then to a lesser extent Malik, Mirza (Mughal, chugtai) and Mirza (Jaral),etc., which are the biggest tribes in the region. Politically, Gujjars,Jaats, Raja and Mirza (Jaral) lead the whole area. The primary language is Pahari/Punjabi. Raja Zulqarnain is the president of Azad Kashmir from Tehsil Bhimber (Distt. Bhimber). The literacy rate & standard of education is very high which gives this area a unique recognition. Although, the literacy rate is high but this area need highly technical education to promote the industry of the area and to contribute fruitful participation in the development of the country. Specially, those youths who wants to go abroad must literate with technical education and English language is utmost important.

In Tehsil Barnala of District Bhimber, Mirza Shafique Jaral was the Agriculture/Live Stock Minister in the Azad Kashmir Assembly. Now, the old Cabinet of Azad Kashmir has been dissolved and new Cabinet has been constituted. It happened, after No- Confidence movement was passed against the Prime Minister Sardar Attique Ahmed. Again after the resignation of Sardar Yaqoub PM of AJ&K, Mirza Shafiq Jarral is now Education Minister of Colleges.In Tehsil Barnala there is a place named "Watala (Mera Jattan)" has a plenty of Mangoe's trees. In Tehsil Barnala "Patni" is the beautiful place for tourism. There is natural mountains, trees & waterfalls etc. In this area mainly the profession of the people is agriculture, cattle. Presently, there is a trend to go abroad in youth. Most people, especially the young generation, is in abroad in different countries of the world. People are prosperous and living their lives with peace and calm. Colonel family belonging to gujjar tribe is very famous.they have their stronghold in every walk of life.
 

Bhirnber, administratively declared as an Independent district in 1996, was a sub division of district Mirpur. This district is very rich in Archaeology arid wildlife, whereas, it’s enchanting valleys present panoramic views to the visitors.

Bhimber

Bhimher, the district headquarter is an old historical town, discussed by Mughal Emperor, “Jahangir” In his book “Tuzh-eJaharigiri”. It fails on the route that was followed by the Mughal Emperors for their frequent visits to the Kashmir Valley. Bhimber town is located at a distance of 50 kilometers from Mirpur and 166 kilometers from Rawalpindi. This town is connected both with Mirpur & Gujrat through all weather black top roads. All the basic amenities of life are available in Bhimber.

Baghsar

Baghsar, 975 meters in elevation is an ideal tourist resort in the Samahni Valley. The Sar, local name for a lake is nearly half kilometer long sheet of crystal-clear water that soothes the senses of a visitor after traveling 64 kilometers journey from Gujrat via Bhimber. On the top of hill is a famous Mughal fort overlooking the lake that acids grandeur to the whole area. This four-storied massive structure of granite is a feat of Mughal engineering that has stood the ravages of time. It has also played important roles in the history during the times of Ahmad Shah Abdali, Ranjeet Sing and Gulab Sing. It is said that Emperor Jahangir on his way back from Kashmir fell Ill and ultimately expired in this Fort.
 

Jandi Chontra

This scenic spot is situated at 17 kilometers from Bhimber and 67 kilometers from Mirpur. Despite its panoramic views, this area is well- known due to the Shrine of Baba Shadi Shaheed nearby Jandi Chontra​
