Uptil now what comes to your mind when you are going to buy a domain name? .com, .net or .org may be? Well a new era of domain names is about to start.
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has voted to start a totally new range of domain name extensions, ending with any word.
These new TLDs (top-level domains) will be something like .ProPakistani .PTCL .PTA .GOOGLE .MSN etc. Words can be from any language.
Currently 22 gTLDs (generic top-level domains) are in operation including .com .net .org etc.
ICANN said that applications for new gTLDs will be accepted from 12 January 2012 to 12 April 2012. These gTLDs will be operational by late 2013.
Only established public or private organizations will be able to apply for these extensions. And surely keeping in view the pricae tag, there is not going to be a mess of such domains in the market as the application fee for such TLDs is approximately $200,000.
Also the applications have to provide proper justification for the TLD, it is requesting for. ICAN is going to have dedicated group of people for this purpose to check and verify the stats and only those application will be accepted who are able to provide legitimate claim.
These new domain names will surely start a new market strategy for brands as imagine if you are going to visit broadband.ptcl or may be landline.ptcl but may be PTCL isn’t going to pay $200,000 ~ 1.75 crore for this, in my opinion. Keeping PTCL aside, these names will not only help companies endorsing their products but will also make them able for a kind of free publicity, indeed.
Working as well as search experience will be totally different at user end and we may be able to discuss it after it’s application that how the SEO is going to be effected.
Also there is always a dark side of the picture. These domains may lead to cybersquatting as we have already seen mass cybersquatting just for .pk domains at country level. But with the launch of these names, worldwide black sheeps will be welcomed. But ICANN has directed that owners should make operational domain names only to avoid cybersquatting here, but at this time it is pre-mature to say how things will work.
