Majeed Amjad was one of the intellectual modern Urdu poets of Indian subcontinent. He was born on 29th June, 1914 in Jhang the smallest town in province of Punjab, Pakistan. He was a well known Urdu poet and widely read as “Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Noon Meem Rashid, Nasir Kazmi or Meeraji”. He was also regarded as profound poet of great depth and sensitivity. He was born in quite poor but respectable family. However he was only two years old when his parents separated and his mother moved back to her parent’s house with him. Majeed Ahmed got his early education from his maternal grandfather and then for few years he studied Arabic and Persian at local mosque before enrolling in first grade in government school.
He did his matriculation in first division from Islamia High School Jhang. After two years he completed his intermediate exam also in first division from Government College Jhang. At that time there were no educational institutions for higher education in Jhang therefore he moved to Lahore and finally received his Bachelor’s degree in 1934 from Islamia College Railway Road in Lahore. These were the days of great depression and economic opportunities were also limited even for highly educated people. Therefore Majeed Ahmed returned to Jhang and joined weekly news paper “Arooj”. He remained the editor of this news paper until 1939. His pros and poetry both are published in this news paper on regular basis.
At the arrival of Second World War he wrote a poem against British Empire and this poem was published on first page of Arooj and after this he was forced to leave this newspaper. After leaving this newspaper he was found a job as clerk in Jhang District Board. Then in 1944 when government set up a civil supplies department to ration food and clothing he passed an entrants test and joined this department. He stayed in this department until his retirement in 1972 at the age of 58 at this time he was residing in Montgomery “now Sahiwal”. He lived in various small and large towns in all over Punjab during his employment with Food Department like in “Layallpur (now Faisalabad), Gojra, Muzaffargarh, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Montgomery”.
He got married with his cousin in 1939 who was an elementary school teacher but their personalities had no compatibility with each other. His marriage life was a total disaster. He passed his last 28 years in Sahiwal while his wife stayed in Jhang. He had no child and left this world forever in 11th May 1974.
